The Joe Hill Memorial Plaque, a work by Suzanne Matsumiya and Eugene Daub (the nationally- recognized sculptor of the Rosa Parks statue), was dedicated Saturday, January 28t at Liberty Hill Plaza, 100 W. 5th Street. Click here for a map to Liberty Hill Plaza

More than 100 members of the local community came together to celebrate San Pedro’s adopted son and to sing Hill’s International Workers of the World (IWW) songs, reminiscent of workers’ struggles in the Port of LA.

Art Almeida, the noted historian of San Pedro’s occupational culture, spearheaded the project with the support of the, Random Lengths Newsand the San Pedro Bay Historical Society, and the International Longshore & Warehouse Union (ILWU) pensioners to make the memorial possible.

Mr. Almeida spoke on the significance of Joe Hill for the labor movement in the LA Harbor along with Greg Mitre, president of the ILWU Pensioners, and Dave Arian past president of the ILWU International and current POLA harbor commissioner, during the ceremony.
